Community Practice Nine
For my community practice nine, I installed an infant car-seat/carrier into my car. I was babysitting and needed to put one into my car for the day but the English instructions were facing the inside of the car and the Spanish instructions were facing the car door. I read the warnings and directions in Spanish but translated them on my phone to English just to make sure that I had it in correctly. Some of the words I learned were seguro, hacia atras, asegurar, and peligro. This experience was beneficial to me because I was able to learn new spanish while doing something in everyday life. I also learned how to read spanish instructions.

Community Practice Number Eight
For my eighth community practice I took out a children's book from the library. I took out the book Goodnight Moon, except I took out the Spanish version titled Buenas Noches Luna. Since I work at a daycare I was familiar with the English version of the book so it made it easier for me to read in Spanish. I ended up bringing the book to work with me and reading it in Spanish and the pre school kids enjoyed it. They are learning numbers and simple words in Spanish so they got excited when they learned the book was in Spanish. After taking the book out I learned that they make either Spanish or English translation books for several popular children's books. When returning the book I went in to look for more and found that Rainbow Fish, has a Spanish version titled El Pez Arco Iris. The woman working at the library informed me that Walmart carries several children's books in Spanish. I think this was beneficial because I was able to learn Spanish myself, while teaching younger kids also.
Community Practice Number Seven
For my seventh community practice I had a conversation in Spanish with my neighbor Monica. She is from Argentina and her entire family speaks fluent Spanish. I decided to use this as my community practice because she taught me a lot about the country that I did not know. I learned that it is the eighth largest country in the world and some things that are very popular there are tango y futbol. I also learned about the colors of Argentina's flag. Although I did not learn many new Spanish words from Monica I learned a lot about the history of Argentina, and also about what it was like when her mother was growing up there. I think it is interesting to learn about Spanish speaking countries, and I definitely would now be more interested in traveling there with her and her family next summer when they go to visit relatives.
Community Practice Number Six
For my sixth community practice I went back to the health care center that I did community volunteer work at last year. Last year I met with a Spanish speaking resident at the home. I really enjoyed speaking with him. The first time we met it was really hard to understand him because he did not speak clearly, since he has gotten older it has become significantly harder to understand him which made the visit difficult. I got involved with volunteering here through a friend who runs the rec activities for the residents. Most of what the resident spoke about was his health and family. Fortunately enough I remember a lot of the vocabulary involving family and health. A new word that I learned was respiracion, meaning breathing. I also learned the words silla de ruedas y perro de terapia. I know my visit was beneficial to both myself and the resident. He got to have some company for an hour that he normally wouldn't receive and I got to expand my Spanish knowledge.
Community Practice Number Five
I recently joined the gym LA fitness in my town. The guy who signed me up was from Brazil and spoke fluent Spanish. He was telling my friend and me about what it was like there and we got into talking about Spanish foods that he enjoys that are nutritious. He referred me to a great personal trainer who also works for the gym who was fluent in Spanish as well, and trains many clients who are Spanish speaking. He was talking about old clients and brought up an email conversation with a Spanish speaking woman who was getting in shape before she went back to her home country. While reading the email I recall understanding words such as traje de bano, fantastico, y flaco. One word I learned was mejora, I discovered that it meant improvement. I think that this experience was beneficial because it goes to show that the Spanish language really is all around us.

Community Practice #8
For my eighth community practice I decided to look up the recipe for empanadas as my mother makes them a lot but I never really watched or learned how they are made. I looked on allrecipes.com and found one like my mother makes and decided to make them myself for my family. Though they did come out a little different this does benefit me because it allows me to experience the spanish culture.
Community Practice #7
For my seventh community practice I decided to go on that shirt film website and watch one. I chose one called Como Dos Desconocidos -“Like Two Strangers” by Roberto Pérez Toledo. It was about this ex-couple meeting each other in a store on accident and talking about how awkward it is to speak to each other now when they used to speak to each other every day. This is beneficial to my learning spanish because I can see it in a real context and understand what I can and look up what I don’t to further my learning.
Community Practice #6
For my sixth community practice I decided when I was in Boston to go to the Isabella Gardner Museum. I decided sense I had already been here before that I would try something new and take an audio tour and use the spanish option. It was kind of like watching a show in spanish, meaning it was hard to pick up on all of the words but I was able to get the jist of it because I already new what it was saying in english. This is a beneficial experience because it allowed me to expand my spanish knowledge and my exposure to spanish.
Community Practice #5
For my fifth community practice I decided to use the self-check out in spanish. I don’t normally use this in spanish so this was new for me. I as able to use the spanish I have learned to pick the correct options. This is a beneficial experience because it allows me to practice what I have already learned and figure out what I don't know.
Community Practice #4
For my fourth community practice I decided to text a friend in spanish. We don’t normally text in spanish so this was new for us. We texted about spring break and I as able to use the spanish I have learned to reply. This is a beneficial experience because it allows me to practice what I have already learned and help others refresh their spanish since its such an important language now.

Antoinette Community Practice #4
For my fourth community practice:
I work at the Quality Inn hotel in East Haven CT. All of my housekeepers are Spanish. In order to get work done, we have to communicate with one another. On March 14, 2015 at work, I told one of the housekeepers, veronica to communicate with me in Spanish for the rest of the day. It was helpful when she used nonverbal suggestions. For example, she asked me for the key in Spanish. She used her hand to gesture "opening the door with a key." This made it easier for me to understand what she was talking about. I tried my best to communicate back to her in Spanish. Throughout the day she taught me words in Spanish and I taught her some words in english. This was very exciting for us both. I want to continue to do this with her when I am work. This is a good way to learn Spanish.

Community Practice Four
For my fourth community practice I chose the self checkout option in Spanish at Stop and Shop. Since I use self checkout often, I knew how to use it even though it was speaking only in Spanish. First I selected a language. I ran into a problem when I could not find the option for peppers. Luckily I remembered how to say it from Spanish. I was able to select "pimientos dojos" and enter the amount I wanted to purchase. I reviewed Spanish words that I already knew, while also learning new words for the food items I was not familiar with. I think that this experience was beneficial because it was a creative way to learn new Spanish in everyday life, while doing my grocery shopping.

Antoinette Community Practice # 3
For my third community practice, I have been using this website http://www.transparent.com/learn-spanish/articles/nov_00.html to look up Spanish article on different topic each day. The articles are first written in Spanish and then towards the bottom of the page, it is translated into English. This gives me an opportunity to read the article in Spanish first and figure out what it is saying. Then I would look at the English version to see how well I translated. For Example:
Practice Spanish with excerpts from "Barcelona" in Spanish, followed by the English translation.
In English:
Barcelona's favorable geographic location, which makes it the gateway and the port of Spain, gives it the special role of serving as the most European enclave in Spain as well as the most influential Spanish presence in Europe. Situated between mountains and the sea, Barcelona is not far from the border formed by the Pyrenees, and welcomes many of the visitors traveling to Spain.
Between Las Ramblas and the Paralelo
Here travelers find themselves at the beginning of one of the most famous avenues on the European continent. An industrious crowd walks smartly on the way to work. Others idle about while window shopping or sitting down in the terrace of some café or on rental chairs under the trees; groups meet to discuss bullfighting news at the Arco del Teatro (Arch of the Theater) or soccer news next to the Fuente de Canaletas (Fountain of Canaletas); a racket radiates from the "free" pigeons or from the birds in their cages hanging in the stalls where aviary merchandise is sold; shouts emanate from the flower vendors standing guard by their stalls; chatter arises from the owners of the kiosks where books, magazines and newspapers are sold. All this forms a happy and lively commotion in the streets which are full of color, light and vitality.
At the entrance of the Conde del Asalto Street, visitors will be surprised by the bold lines of the Güell palace, one of Gaudí's works. The Museum of the Theater also located here. Sooner or later Las Ramblas and its parallel streets will take you directly or indirectly to the Paralelo. The Paralelo is a curious mixture of Broadway and Montmartre done in a very Barcelonan way, where the noisy life of the theater, especially at night, finds its expression.

Antoinette Community Practice #2
I work at a hotel and all of the housekeepers are spanish. In the morning one of the housekeepers would give me a list of things we need for the hotel. I decided to write the list of things we need in spanish. This allows me to become familiar with the words.

Community Practice Three
For my third community practice I helped my brother with his Spanish project. For the assignment he had to create a comic strip of two people talking in Spanish. Since he is still in high school his Spanish is very basic. I taught him about the conjugation of some words he was not familiar with. I also taught him to talk about places and taking trips. The words he used in his comic strip were: el destino, el hotel, el viaje, and el barco. This was beneficial to me, because I was able to review old Spanish words I leard last semester, and earlier this semester, while teaching my brother new words he didn't know before.
